The DreamHack ZOWIE Open stop in Austin, Texas kicked off in the Texan afternoon with a best-of-one Group A opening match between Luminosity, the last Major winners], and Splyce, who were using Ryan "freakazoid" Abadir and Jaryd "summit" Lazar as stand-ins for the event.
With the map being Train, the Brazilian side decided to right away set the tone of the game as Marcelo "coldzera" David picked up three USP kills on the B-site to give Luminosity the first pistolround.

This theme (of Luminosity's superiority) was dominant during the first half, as the Brazilian team managed to come out on top of many afterplant retakes and clutch situations (including Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo winning a one-versus-three) to end the half 14-1. Despite Splyce attempting to mount a defense of their own on their CT-side, it was Luminosity who walked away with the map win with little effort, winning 16-5.

The second opening match took place in Group B and featured Brazilian team Tempo Storm, currently ranked 10th in the world, against NRG, a scrappy North American team comprising a German and a Serbian players in its ranks as well.
Off the back of Henrique "HEN1" Teles getting three USP kills on the team's CT-side pistolround, Tempo Storm powered ahead to an early lead, but a couple of clever executes from Fatih "gob b" Dayik & co. gave NRG the first gunround and the next two rounds. Once again however, the Brazilian team proved to be a worthy defender and finished the half up 11-4.
However, Tempo Storm stormed onto the B-site on their T-side pistolround and continued denying map and game control to NRG, and ultimately won the map 16-5 to advance to the Group B winners' match.
